BiNetHol, which stands for Bidirectional Education System based on holographic cabins Through 5G Networks, is a Platform Extension for the IMAGINE-B5G Spanish test-facility from the partners Aumenta Solutions. It is one of 15 projects that were selected for the first Open Call of Imagine-B5G.
BiNetHol is a platform extension for the Spanish facility in the IMAGINE-B5G project. To augment the current platform at UPV’s immersive lab, Aumenta solutions will provide cutting-edge a holographic capture setup and cabin to test and study holographic communications.
Within the project, aside from providing the equipment, the main objective of the project is to validate the use of holographic equipment in the educational field, employing 5G networks for unidirectional and bidirectional signal transmission.
The proposed goals are to analyze the necessary technical characteristics of 5G networks and to enable bidirectional holographic transmission, assessing the impact of these characteristics on the quality and authenticity of the experience through use case scenarios (unidirectional and bidirectional), and comparing the improvements with current bidirectional video-based learning systems.
The proposed solution will impact IMAGINE-B5G in different ways:
- Management level: The primary goal is to demonstrate a substantial enhancement in the efficiency of utilizing new resources. This improvement is directed towards achieving zero-touch management, streamlining operational processes, and ensuring effective operational expenditure (OPEX). By leveraging holographic technology and 5G networks, the project seeks to establish a more resource-efficient educational environment, contributing to a seamless and automated management system.
- Societal level: Holography can create a more dynamic, inclusive, and engaging educational ecosystem. It can accommodate diverse learning styles, promote global collaboration, and provide specialized training opportunities. Ultimately, holography has the potential to redefine education’s very essence, adapting it to the needs of the 21st century. This project serves as a visionary exploration of holography’s immense potential within education. It seeks to provide tangible, data-driven evidence of holography’s capabilities, especially as more affordable and accessible display technologies emerge. Additionally, there are other beneficial impacts, such as carbon footprint reduction and business and economic growth.
- Technical level: The implementation of bidirectional holography using a 5G network introduces several technical improvements over current visualization technologies, including traditional video conferencing. Some of the key technical advancements are validation of 5G networks for use in unidirectional and bidirectional holography, validation of advanced compression algorithms, impact on QoE methodology, true-to-Life depth perception and enhanced engagement and interaction.
- Vertical Area(s): bidirectional holographic communication has the potential to bring several impactful changes to various vertical industries. Here are some ways in which this technology could influence specific sectors: education and training, healthcare, manufacturing and design, conferencing, entertainment, retail and construction, among others.
