AbySS-5G in Imagine-B5G Open Call #3

The ABySS-5G (Autonomous Boat for Safety & Security with 5G) demonstrates the effective use of a 5G-connected autonomous boat named “Kaluga” on human safety, surveillance, and environmental monitoring operations near the Port of Valencia.

The project consists on the deployment of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) which combined with advance 5G capabilities, such as the configuration of network slicing to allocate dedicated network resources for specific use cases or the exploration of commercial network APIs to enhance service quality in high-demand scenarios, will collaborate in maritime PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief) activities such as threat detection or environmental monitoring. These operations will be tested at the end of the project through a real demonstration, which includes a navigation near the Port of Valencia and Patacona Beach with environmental monitoring and threat vessels detection, as well as the deployment of an automatic lifebuoy system for people in distress. The trials will also incorporate network quality measurement tools to enable the analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) and key value indicators (KVIs) relevant to the project.

The proposed solution is poised to impact IMAGINE-B5G on multiple levels:

Management Level: The shift from manned to unmanned daily coastal surveillance operations can have a significant impact, eliminating the need for crew shift rotations and reducing exposure to hazardous conditions such as bad weather or pollution. The suppression of the crew will reduce the operational cost onboard of the surveillance activities, it will permit people constrained to operate a manned system due to physical limitations to operate the USV and will allow the supervision of several USVs by a single person.

Societal Level: The presence of USVs (Unmanned Surface Vehicles) along the
coastline for surveillance and rescue operations would significantly enhance the quality of life for citizens. Some of the improvements are:

  • Better emergency response.
  • Reducing accident risks.
  • Creation of more and more inclusive job opportunities.
  • More sustainable surveillance method.

Technical Level: The project integrates cutting-edge technologies and an advanced communication system into the existing systems of the user. These technologies include sophisticated sensors that will allow real-time monitoring and enhanced decision making, reducing human error, and high-speed communication networks directly connected with the emergency services. This integration will significantly improve the effectiveness and reliability of the safety operations.

Vertical Area(s): The industries benefiting from USV technology include maritime security, environmental research, oil and gas, defence, and commercial shipping. The interoperability between the USV provided by ABySS-5G and the different technologies that are involved in maritime operations constitutes a powerful deployment capable of carrying out complex missions such as search and rescue, environmental monitoring, and defence applications.
