RESCUE-5G, a Vertical Experiment for the IMAGINE-B5G Spanish test facility, is led by FAVIT in collaboration with LEMVOS, working with the Spanish partner Fundación Valenciaport. It is one of 15 projects selected for the second Open Call of Imagine-B5G.
FAVIT and LEMVOS have joined forces in the “RESCUE-5G” experiment, which aims to enhance maritime port safety and efficiency through cutting-edge technologies, including Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), AI-powered image and sonar data analysis, advanced 5G communications and an immersive decision support system (IDSS).

The primary objective of this experiment is to validate a real-time, integrated surveillance and emergency response system. The experiment focuses on critical applications on the port’s water surface, such as floating debris collection, targeted bathymetric inspections, and rapid deployment of rescue buoys in emergency scenarios. This project represents a significant advancement in port safety and operational optimization within the renowned Port of Valencia.
The proposed solution will impact IMAGINE-B5G in different ways:
- Management Level: By leveraging advanced 5G network functionalities such as network slicing, AI-based image recognition models and AR immersive visualisation, RESCUE-5G will transform the approach to port safety and security by dynamically managing resources to better respond to emergencies and environmental alerts.
- Societal Level: By integrating 5G-enabled AI analytics for real-time decision support, RESCUE-5G contributes to enhancing the response to emergencies in the port’s water surface, such as deploying rescue buoys or collecting floating debris from a USV, contributing to saving lives in high-risk situations or reducing the impact of environmental incidents. Additionally, RESCUE-5G prioritizes data privacy and aligns with societal values by anonymizing collected data and complying with GDPR regulations.
- Technical Level: RESCUE-5G demonstrates advanced 5G capabilities, including ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) for real-time HD video and sonar data transmission. It enables the automation of critical surveillance and inspection tasks, streamlining operations and increasing accuracy through AI-powered anomaly detection that facilitates decision support in an immersive environment.
- Vertical Area(s): RESCUE-5G falls under the “Advanced Surveillance” use case for maritime ports, focusing on Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile Broadband. The project aligns with vertical scenarios such as environmental monitoring, critical infrastructure inspection, and emergency response.
