The project ADS-5G, an acronym for “Autonomous delivery service using 5G and GNSS localization fusion” aims to enhance localization accuracy and ensure continuous positioning by combining 5G and GNSS positioning. The experiment will involve a YouShip autonomous delivery robot (ADR) delivering small packages across indoor and outdoor routes within the Altice Labs campus, addressing transportation and logistics challenges, and is among the 15 projects selected for the Third Open Call of Imagine-B5G.
YouShip offers a 2-in-1 solution with follow-me and autonomous delivery capabilities, providing flexibility to work both indoors and outdoors. The mobile robot has six wheels, a 50-liter cargo container, and an autonomy of six (6) hours. It can climb sidewalks and drive seamlessly indoors and outdoors.
Equipped with GNSS technology, AI, and machine vision algorithms, the robot safely and swiftly navigates autonomously in short routes or following the right person, avoiding obstacles and offering a smooth delivery experience.
The company has been working on autonomous navigation based on GNSS localization. However, a complementary localization system to aid GNSS-based localization is missing. 5G positioning and communication systems can bring several advantages.
Therefore, this project aims to take advantage of 5G technology that significantly enhances localization accuracy, low latency communication, and reliable indoor/outdoor communication. In addition, the Portuguese facility (Altice Labs – Aveiro) provides the ideal environment to carry out the experiments.
The proposed solution is poised to impact IMAGINE-B5G on multiple levels:
Management Level: Integrating 5G with GNSS and SLAM provides a robust solution for improving localization accuracy and reliability, essential for autonomous systems. It significantly enhances resource efficiency and reduce operational expenses.
Societal Level: Autonomous navigation based on 5G and GNSS will improve robot navigation and reduce the number of navigation interruptions and errors, resulting in impact on energy consumption, cost, affordability, trustworthiness, and security.
Technical Level: Will integrate 5G core network, edge, cloud, and mobile robotics computing environments to create a unified management landscape supporting a European offer. The solution relies on ultra-low latency and positioning provided by 5G/6G networks, enabling real-time RTK corrections and 5G-NR localization, with the potential for scale across Europe. A mobile app will enhance usability, enabling order placement, tracking, and interaction.
Vertical Area(s): Will demonstrate the use case “Improved localization mechanisms for transportation and logistics” in the Transports and Logistics Vertical Area.
In summary, ADS-5G innovative approach to autonomous delivery service aligns with IMAGINE-B5G objectives, offering a comprehensive solution that spans management, societal, technical, and vertical dimensions.
