The Connected Home for Healthy Ageing (CHHA) project, led by researchers at the Instituto de Engenharia Electrónica e Informática de Aveiro, has been selected for IMAGINE-B5G Open Call #2. This vertical experiment aims to enhance independent living and promote healthy ageing by leveraging advanced 5G capabilities for smart home-based health monitoring and virtual rehabilitation solutions.
The project integrates two innovative eHealth services designed to improve physical activity, monitor daily movement, and support older adults in staying active and socially connected:
• Distributed Gamified Virtual Gym: A remote fitness solution that allows users to exercise at home while interacting with others virtually. By leveraging high-speed 5G streaming, real-time video feeds, and gamification techniques, this service enhances exercise motivation, adherence, and social engagement.
• Radar-Based Activity Monitoring: A non-intrusive monitoring system that uses radar sensors to track movement patterns throughout the home. This service enables the early detection of reduced activity, providing valuable insights for caregivers and healthcare professionals while ensuring user privacy.
The proposed solution is poised to impact IMAGINE-B5G on multiple levels:
Management Level:
CHHA will validate IMAGINE-B5G’s testbed infrastructure for real-time health monitoring applications that require low-latency communication, high data throughput, and secure cloud processing. It will demonstrate the feasibility of home-based 5G-powered healthcare solutions in real-world settings.
Societal Level:
The project addresses the challenges of an ageing population by promoting active ageing, reducing isolation, and enabling preventive healthcare at home. By supporting remote rehabilitation and continuous activity tracking, CHHA contributes to healthier, more independent lifestyles for older adults, ultimately reducing healthcare costs and hospital admissions.
Technical Level:
CHHA will leverage the following advanced 5G features within the IMAGINE-B5G ecosystem:
• Ultra-low latency & High Reliability: Ensuring smooth, real-time video streaming for virtual exercise sessions and accurate motion tracking.
• Edge Computing & AI-powered analytics: Enabling fast data processing for activity recognition and health monitoring.
• Secure and Private Network Slicing: Protecting sensitive health-related data while ensuring reliable connectivity for home-based users.
Vertical Area(s):
CHHA aligns with the vertical focus on eHealth, Smart Homes, and Assisted Living by integrating next-generation digital health solutions into residential environments. The project strengthens the case for 5G-enabled healthcare, creating a testbed for future home-based health innovations.
As the global ageing population grows, the demand for home-based health monitoring and remote care solutions is rising. CHHA offers a glimpse into the future of connected healthcare, where homes become intelligent health hubs supporting active lifestyles, continuous monitoring, and personalized care.
The CHHA trials are now underway at the PT facility in Portugal, with real-world user evaluations planned next. Stay tuned for updates on how CHHA is shaping the future of healthy ageing!
