PORTSAFE-B5G in Imagine-B5G Open Call #3

HoloMEd: Shaping the Future of Immersive Education with XR and B5G Technologies

HoloMEd—short for “Multiuser XR Holo-portation Trials for Immersive Media Education over B5G Scenarios”—is one of the innovative projects selected in IMAGINE-B5G’s Open Call 3.

Led by the i2CAT Foundation (Barcelona), HoloMEd is conducting vertical experiments to explore the potential of immersive technologies and next-generation networks in transforming the field of education.

At the core of the project is HoloMIT, a versatile holo-portation platform. HoloMIT enables geographically distributed user to connect, interact, and collaborate through life-sized, highly realistic 3D holograms captured in real-time, using affordable and off-the-shelf equipment. This results in deeply natural and immersive experiences—as if participants were physically present in the same space, despite being miles apart.

HoloMEd is also introducing novel interfaces between the HoloMIT platform and the B5G network, enabling intelligent data rate adaptation based on available network resources or service prioritization. This ensures optimal performance and reliability of the eXtended Reality (XR) service under varying network conditions.

To validate its approach, the project will run large-scale, real-world pilots and demonstrators across a range of educational scenarios, including:

  • Fully immersive Virtual Reality (VR) learning environments,
  • Hybrid eXtended Reality (XR) setups where in-person audiences engage with remotely projected holographic experts; and
  • Traditional in-person lessons, as a baseline for comparison.

These experiments will primarily take place within the UPV testbed, but they will also consider remote participants joining from the i2CAT testbed, simulating ubiquitous, distributed learning environments. Through this experimentation strategy, HoloMEd aims not only to assess the benefits of XR and B5G in education but also to benchmark them against conventional physical learning settings.

In summary, HoloMEd strongly aligns with IMAGINE-B5G’s objectives and vision, offering a compelling combination of technical innovation and real-world impact. Beyond advancing immersive education technologies, the project is set to generate important insights into their societal, economic, and sustainability implications, with the potential to catalyze transformation across key sectors.
