IMAGINE-B5G @ EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026

The IMAGINE-B5G project participated in the 2026 EuCNC & 6G Summit, held from 2 to 5 June 2026 at the Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga, FYCMA, in Spain. Across workshops, special sessions and poster activities, the project shared key results from its large-scale trials, contributed to discussions on sustainable 6G standardisation, and presented outcomes from its open call ecosystem.

On 2 June, IMAGINE-B5G Coordinator David Gomez Barquero, from Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), contributed to the workshop Large-Scale Trials and Pilots: The Pathway from SNS JU Call 1 to R&I Work Programme 2027.” The workshop focused on success stories from SNS JU Stream D projects (large-scale trials and pilots with verticals), which received a cumulative investment of 122 M€. It highlighted the importance of strong vertical involvement from early research stages, performance validation under realistic conditions, a deeper understanding of sector-specific requirements, and the development of credible business models.

During the session “Key Results and Impacts from SNS Call 1–3 Trials & Pilots Projects,” David presented IMAGINE-B5G’s achievements in the real-world validation of B5G capabilities for port operations and selected project results. He also participated as a panellist in the discussion “Looking Back and Planning Ahead: Trials and Pilots in SNS R&I Work Programme 2027 and Beyond.”

On 4 June, Dr Hanne-Stine Hallingby, Senior Research Scientist and Director Use Cases and Solutions at Telenor, represented IMAGINE-B5G in the special session From Principles to Practice: Embedding Sustainability in 6G Standardisation.” Her presentation, “Sustainable 6G business models, and 6G business models for sustainability,” addressed the role of real interoperability in creating sustainable 6G business models and ecosystems.

This special session had a goal to bring together leading international bodies—3GPP, ITU-T, ETSI, and relevant European thinkers—to explore how sustainability principles are being incorporated into emerging 6G standardization frameworks. The session gathered insights on the aligned progress, identify gaps, and outline a shared roadmap for integrating sustainability metrics, methodologies, and compliance frameworks into formal standards activities.

Dr Hallingby highlighted that interoperability is essential to make it easier and more attractive for stakeholders to integrate technological components for new innovations, including the use of 6G to generate social and environmental benefits. Her presentation also underlined the importance of supporting economic sustainability through phased feature releases, business-ready features, implementation guidelines, and standardised MANO, OSS and BSS frameworks.

On 5 June, IMAGINE-B5G was represented by South East Technological University (SETU) in the special session Cascaded Funding in SNS Program – Accomplishments, Challenges, and Future Potential.” The session focused on the impact of open calls and Financial Support for Third Parties (FSTP), including technological progress, benefits for third-party participants, good practices from open call projects, and opportunities to improve future implementation processes.

The goal of this session was to discuss various aspects of the open calls, in particular how far the expectations of the Financial Support for Third Parties (FSTP) have been fulfilled, determining whether the goals of the parent projects in terms of technological advancement met, what are the gains of the open call involvement for the 3rd parties, best practices from implementations of the open call projects, and how can we improve implementation processes of the open calls under the future projects and programs. IMAGINE-B5G was co-presented by James Clarke, South East Technological University (SETU), as financial and administrative management of the open calls persepctive, and Flávio de Oliveira Silva, OmniumAI, who presented the open caller and FSTP recipient perspective, including results from NEURONET – iNtelligent Energy Usage-awaRe platfOrm for sustaiNable grEen neTworking, funded by IMAGINE-B5G in its third open call.

The project was also showcased during the event through a dedicated poster. Following the event, IMAGINE-B5G was also highlighted by the SNS JU programme as an example of how 5G/6G innovation is moving towards real-world impact. The project was featured in posts showcasing its work on emergency response scenarios, including the use of drones, mixed reality, digital twins and interconnection between private 5G networks.
