PULSE-5G in Imagine-B5G Open Call #3

From Cloud Logic to Shop Floor Efficiency: Simtera’s Vision in IMAGINE-B5G OC#3

PULSE-5G, short for Predictive Utilization of cloud Logic and Sensors for Efficiency with 5G, is one of the selected vertical experiments under the 3rd Open Call of the IMAGINE-B5G project. Coordinated by Simtera ICT, an SME based in Türkiye, this project explores the power of 5G-enabled industrial monitoring at the Norwegian Facility, pushing forward scalable and intelligent automation through the PLC-as-a-Service (PLCaaS) model.

The goal? Enable smart manufacturing with AI-driven predictive maintenance, fully wireless monitoring setups, and real-time feedback loops—bridging edge and cloud intelligence via ultra-reliable 5G.

The proposed solution is poised to impact IMAGINE-B5G on multiple levels:

Management Level: Simtera’s FabMetrics Platform introduces a plug-and-play framework that empowers manufacturers to manage industrial data flows without extensive IT or OT support. By moving logic and AI orchestration into the cloud, the platform simplifies deployment and operation of predictive maintenance services. This approach reduces dependency on in-house infrastructure, allowing remote management, scalable deployments, and flexible updates—aligned with modern servitization models.

Societal Level: By democratizing access to predictive analytics and industrial automation, PULSE-5G supports the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in regions where access to advanced technologies is limited. Through real-time condition monitoring, it contributes to worker safety, reduced energy consumption, and early failure detection—supporting sustainability and resilience in manufacturing ecosystems.

Technical Level: The experiment validates bidirectional data loops between shopfloor, edge, and cloud under varied 5G conditions. It demonstrates how AI models trained in the cloud can be executed at the edge for anomaly detection, while adapting sampling rates dynamically. Simtera tests critical performance KPIs, showing how 5G empowers scalable edge-cloud integration in real industrial settings.

Vertical Area(s): Industry 4.0 – Smart manufacturing, predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, and control system virtualization (PLCaaS). The solution is particularly suited for manufacturing environments with less computationally demanding control tasks, where 5G latency is acceptable for real-time operations.

Why the Norwegian Facility?

The Norwegian site offers:

  • A fully standalone 5G indoor radio setup ideal for latency-sensitive tasks
  • Edge and cloud orchestration environments for workload distribution
  • Remote access and slicing configuration support
  • Collaboration opportunities with 5G experts to tune the experiment

Simtera installs its own soft PLCs, edge gateways, and IoT sensors to simulate factory processes and analyze 5G-enabled performance across real-time workflows.

What’s Next?

With PULSE-5G now underway, Simtera will produce:

  • KPI reports on cloud-edge data orchestration
  • Insights into PLCaaS performance under 5G
  • A digital twin demo showing real-time system behavior

The outcomes will help refine Simtera’s commercial offering and contribute to the IMAGINE-B5G knowledge base with validated Industry 4.0 scenarios for low-latency 5G networks.
