SCANNER in Imagine-B5G Open Call #3

The Smart Component Analysis through Novel XR Environments and Robotics (SCANNER) project addresses the need for more objective, transparent, and automated inspection of industrial components across their lifecycle, from factory floors to field operations and maintenance workshops. Current manual inspection methods of wear and tear rely heavily on human senses and expertise, leading to inconsistent evaluations and limited data exchange between stakeholders. SCANNER tackles these challenges by combining micrometer level 3D scanning, XR (extended reality), robotics, and 5G technologies.

The project’s core innovation lies in creating high-precision digital twins of industrial components using robotic scanning systems and integrating them into a multi-user collaborative XR environment. This platform enables remote inspections, real-time interaction, and tactile feedback through 3D pens and gloves. Users can annotate, manipulate, and measure 3D models with exceptional detail, fostering better communication across design, production, and maintenance teams.

The architecture will be tailored to leverage the capabilities of 5G networks, ensuring low-latency and high-quality visualization. Controlled measurements of network performance guide optimization efforts, enhancing data transmission efficiency and XR rendering quality. These refinements ensure seamless real-time experiences and robust performance in demanding industrial environments.

Building on Finwe’s experience and hardware for 3D scanning, XR development, and 5G collaboration, SCANNER leverages open-source frameworks like Babylon.js and WebXR to ensure scalability and accessibility. It aims to deliver a commercially viable solution for Industry 4.0, bridging the gap between traditional inspection methods and cutting-edge digital tools. The results will position SCANNER as a pioneer in XR-enabled quality assurance, paving the way for future innovations in industrial maintenance and inspection.

The proposed solution aims to impact the IMAGINE-B5G project as follows:

SCANNER revolutionizes inspections by using high-precision digital twins to track a component’s wear and tear over its lifespan. Automated scanning ensures reliable, consistent data, helping designers improve durability and minimize downtime while reducing waste and costs. SCANNER’s objective, data-driven approach simplifies decision-making, providing clear justification for retooling, repairs, or replacements.

SCANNER enhances communication between design teams, manufacturing, and maintenance by leveraging remote XR collaboration. Complex 3D structures are challenging to describe with words or 2D images. It is where 3D XR excels, and enables precise measurements, markings, and annotations. This clarity improves understanding and decision-making across teams. Remote capabilities ensure the right experts can contribute, reduces travel costs and increases mobility.
