The “SIMONE” project, which stands for “Evaluating immerSIve coMmunicatiOn for eNhanced remote Education”, aims to evaluate an immersive remote education service over Beyond 5G (B5G) networks, by leveraging the Norwegian facility of the IMAGINE-B5G project. Our goal is thus to empirically characterise the performance of an immersive remote education service that can enhance teacher-student (i.e., instructor-trainee) communication and dynamics thanks to B5G networks and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies. The results from SIMONE are applicable across various educational scenarios, including engineering studies, art education (e.g., music), and healthcare personnel training, where real-time and interactive demonstrations are essential. The SIMONE project is jointly carried out by Karlstad University (KAU) and Softcode.
The proposed solution is poised to impact IMAGINE-B5G on multiple levels:
- Societal Level: SIMONE assesses the impact of B5G and AR/VR technologies on remote education. The SIMONE approach evaluates Quality Education regarding the fraction of students who self-reported increased engagement and technology acceptance in terms of self-reported improved learning experience. The project also assesses Inclusiveness by recording the number of students with specific needs who gain access to personalized education.
- Technical Level: SIMONE measures network KPIs such as throughput, latency, and reliability and correlates them with experience from user trials, thereby providing a comprehensive analysis of how network performance impacts user experience and educational outcomes.
The broader scientific community will also be able to leverage the results produced by the SIMONE project. The software developed within SIMONE will be made accessible to those interested in creating similar immersive remote education solutions. Industries and SMEs will be able to use the experimental results of the SIMONE project as a starting point for benchmarking their solutions. In contrast, networking researchers can use the results of the SIMONE project as a starting point to check the feasibility of enabling immersive communication verticals on top of 5G/B5G systems.
In summary, the SIMONE project will empirically validate the real-time capture-transmission-display process that facilitates bidirectional communication between instructors and trainees, ultimately making it possible to characterize the performance of immersive communication scenarios on top of 5G/B5G networks.
This project has already started its work in the IMAGINE-B5G second open call. If you want to learn more about this and the other selected projects, stay tuned to our website and our social media channels.
