Imagine-B5G Showcased in SNS JU’s New White Paper on 6G for Media & Entertainment

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has released its White Paper “6G for Media and Entertainment”, highlighting how the sector is rapidly evolving towards immersive, interactive, and AI-enhanced content. The document presents 22 projects and 46 use cases that demonstrate how advanced network capabilities will support new media formats, immersive services, and innovative user experiences.

Among the projects featured, Imagine-B5G is recognised for its strong focus on immersive media and for enabling several experiments that explore the interaction between 5G networks and next-generation media applications.

Imagine-B5G Use Cases Highlighted in the White Paper

Imagine-B5G addresses scenarios such as Dynamic XR, Enhanced Touristic Experiences, and Bidirectional Education with holographic cabins, contributing to the wider exploration of immersive media within the SNS JU programme.

XR and Multi-User Interaction

The DEMOCRATS Open Call project deployed a true multi-user XR gaming application, combining virtual and real elements that interact with one another. The system integrated mitigation components to deal with varying network conditions, particularly latency and jitter, which is essential when operating over wireless mobile networks such as 5G. Results show that highly time-sensitive XR applications can be reliably supported even when features such as URLLC are not widely available.

Holographic Education

Two Open Call projects validated new approaches for holographic learning environments:

  • BINETHOL, which used holographic displays in educational settings supported by a private 5G network. Early results show that 91% of users preferred holographic lessons over traditional videoconferencing, and 75% found learning easier with holograms.
  • VM4Academia, which explored the use of human holograms reconstructed with AI from plain 2D video. These holograms were streamed into a WebXR application across smartphones, PCs and head-mounted displays. Results indicate that users considered holograms better for learning, and that 5G networks can successfully carry holograms to end users.

Complementary Pilots on Holographic Media

The White Paper also refers to additional pilots in Spain involving UPV and Telefónica. These experiments validated full-body volumetric capture and hologram delivery for education, entertainment and telepresence, using both real-time and on-demand content. Users reported seeing strong potential in holographic technologies due to their immersion and improved focus, and the pilots confirmed that 5G networks are capable of transporting holographic content.

The inclusion of Imagine-B5G in the SNS JU White Paper underscores the project’s contribution to advancing immersive media applications and validating new forms of XR and holographic communication over 5G networks. By enabling diverse pilots and supporting multiple Open Call projects, Imagine-B5G demonstrates how existing connectivity infrastructures can already support emerging media formats that will evolve further with future network generations.
