CogNetCare in Imagine-B5G Open Call #2.

Advancing Population Cognitive Health with 5G (CogNetCare) is an innovative vertical experiment led by Neuroinova (Portugal), selected for the IMAGINE-B5G Open Call #2. This project aims to revolutionize cognitive healthcare by leveraging advanced 5G capabilities to deliver accurate, remote cognitive and physical assessments for early detection and monitoring of cognitive impairments.

CogNetCare focuses on integrating two healthcare solutions into a unified framework to address critical gaps in cognitive health management:

  • Brain on Track: A medically certified tool utilizing serious games to screen for cognitive impairments remotely.
  • Neuro on Stride: A remote gait and fine motor assessment solution designed to detect early signs of physical and cognitive decline, particularly in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

The project aims to deploy these solutions in non-traditional settings, such as mass screening booths or residential environments, ensuring accessibility and reliability through the advanced capabilities of 5G networks.

The proposed solution aims to impact the IMAGINE-B5G project on different levels as follows:

  • 1. Management Level: CogNetCare will validate the suitability of IMAGINE-B5G’s testbed facilities in handling healthcare applications that require low latency, high reliability, and real-time processing. This alignment demonstrates the efficacy of advanced 5G technologies for diverse applications in the healthcare sector.
  • 2. Societal Level: The project addresses societal challenges in healthcare, such as the lack of access to timely cognitive assessments in underserved regions. CogNetCare enhances patient outcomes and supports caregivers with reliable tools by facilitating early detection and continuous monitoring of neurodegenerative conditions.
  • 3. Technical Level: CogNetCare leverages the following advanced 5G features:
    • Dynamic Slicing: Ensures low-latency, high-reliability performance for cognitive and physical monitoring applications.
    • Accurate Positioning: Enables precise gait analysis to detect subtle changes indicative of neurological conditions.
    • Real-time Data Processing: Provides immediate insights for clinicians and patients, ensuring actionable outcomes.
  • 4. Vertical Area(s): The project aligns with the vertical focus of Industrial Innovation within the healthcare domain. By enhancing digital health solutions, CogNetCare supports a transition toward smarter, more efficient, and equitable healthcare delivery systems.

Globally, millions at risk for cognitive impairment remain undiagnosed. CogNetCare bridges this gap, bringing accessible screening and monitoring to everyday settings. Its dual focus on cognitive and physical health improves care and advances research in neurodegenerative diseases. Through its integration of Brain on Track and Neuro on Stride, the project not only enhances individual health outcomes but also contributes valuable data to the field of neuroscience research, advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and the effectiveness of interventions.

This project has already started its work in the IMAGINE-B5G second open call, with real-world pilots in mass screening booth settings next. If you want to learn more about this and the other selected projects, stay tuned to our website and our social media channels.
