FI-VEG in Imagine-B5G Open Call #2

FI-VEG is a Vertical Experiments project for the IMAGINE-B5G Spanish test facility from ITACyL (Instituto de Técnica Agraria de Castilla Y Leon). It is one of 15 projects selected for the second Open Call of Imagine-B5G.

The system FI-VEG focuses on integrating 5G technology with real-time sensing and analysis systems in agriculture to enhance precision and efficiency in crop monitoring and management through three main components: 

• IoT sensor network for ripening tracking,
• Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) sensors for phenological crop monitoring,
• Integration of cameras onboard Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for real-time streaming of crops.

The data will be processed by an IA to convert the signals detected in parameters of the ripening of the grapes, helping the vineyard owner in the harvest decision process.
The cameras will help detect pests and incursions of animal wildlife in the fields.

The system has been developed by ITACyL (Instituto de Técnica Agraria de Castilla Y Leon).

The proposed solution will impact IMAGINE-B5G in different ways:

• At societal level: FI-VEG steps ahead in the agriculture digitalization, allowing the winegrowers to adopt tools that will lead them to more efficient and sustainable viticultural practices, optimizing grape production and wine quality. This can help mitigate challenges such as climate variability, improve mechanization, and enhance vineyards’ overall profitability and sustainability.
• At Vertical level: Improved crop quality by assisting in the harvest decision process. Protection of the crops with the detection of the animal wildlife and pests at their appearance.
• At technical level: The implementation of advanced 5G technologies and IoT solutions can revolutionize connectivity in rural and agricultural areas. Enhanced communication networks will facilitate real-time data collection and analysis, leading to better decision-making and operational efficiency in various applications, including smart farming.
