LEOSED in Imagine-B5G Open Call #1.

LEOSED, stands for (Leveraging Edge Optical Sensing for Emergency Diagnostics), is a Vertical Experiments project for the IMAGINE-B5G Norwegian test-facility from the partners Huawei Technologies Duesseldorf GmbH. It is one of 15 projects that were selected for the first Open Call of Imagine-B5G.
Integrating optical wireless sensing of pulse and blood oxygen saturation (OWSPOS) in B5G/6G edge can support swift critical patient diagnosis and monitoring in the health sector. OWSPOS achieves this goal through contactless and automated measurement of vitals, and is aimed at two aspects. Firstly, it can reduce the risk of introducing new patients to a wrong triage level. Secondly, the implementation can be used in long term patient monitoring in conjunction with current monitoring devices, or as a standalone implementation. The main goal of LEOSED project is to test the feasibility of OWSPOS as a key B5G/6G eHealth vertical application and perform experiments to understand its communication and computation requirements. To achieve this, LEOSED will test:

1. Disassociating the sensing from the processing: to reduce the dependency on energy and hardware for each sensor and evolve towards the B5G/6G network sensing paradigm for remote care.

2. Scaling to multiple sensors to allow flexibility of remote care eHealth applications.

The proposed solution will impact IMAGINE-B5G in different ways: 

  • At the Management level, LEOSED aims at showing novel advanced ICT related vertical use cases that are migrating from labour-intensive to being automated and offloaded through communication and computation. Such is the eHealth for B5G/6G application that is of particular interest since it has a potential to become an adopted vertical technology that will become ubiquitous and vastly increase the socio-economic benefits of automating vital measurements. Since the system cost scales with less expensive equipment (the optical sensors) it can be deployed at many different healthcare facilities, care rooms, emergency rooms, waiting rooms, pharmacies etc. Due to this, LEOSED is specifically aimed at experimentation in Telco-operated networks to test the scalability of the system and evaluate the potential of B5G/6G as an eHealth vertical. 
  • At the Societal level, the long-term innovation potential of LEOSED is to enable fully remote patient care, at the very least, in scenarios where the patients are in a very remote location or in cases where the emergency room unit has low capacity, or the monitoring capabilities are not satisfactory for the patients. As such, LEOSED aims to develop services that lower the entry barriers for end-customers to adopt B5G-enabled solutions. 
  • At the Technical level, the vertical experiment will hopefully act as a showcase of the traffic requirements of advanced sensing within the novel optical wireless integrated sensing and communications technologies. This will extract useful insights into the novel and anticipated traffic that will occur mostly upstream. Thus, the end-to-end testing can be further mapped to more complex sensing applications and will provide a crucial insight of sensing eligibility to the broad scientific community. In fact, one of the milestones of LEOSED is to produce scientific dissemination of the discoveries.
  • At the Vertical Area(s), regarding healthcare as an industry, a successful outcome of LEOSED could result in OWSPOS products leaving the experimental phase, and becoming feasible for further investment into dedicated prototypes. Following this, OWSPOS could be further engineered to be a low-cost implementation for more ubiquitous use inside triage and care units that are B5G or 6G enabled. This would greatly benefit EU local health companies to enhance and automate their capabilities at lower cost and manpower.
