In European rural areas, younger people tend to leave while elderly patients continue their lives there. Huawei explores remote care solutions for rural elderly patients without dramatically increasing the cost of digital devices. The Huawei LEOSED project is an Open Call project in IMAGINE-B5G which tests diagnostic devices, using Telenor R&Is advanced 5G testing facility. Throughout 2024, LEOSED has tested how to leverage advanced 5G with low-cost optical sensing and remote care applications to produce pulse and blood saturation measurements for remote and contactless patient monitoring. The local equipment carries out sensing of one patient and creates a data stream transmitted by 5G to the remote server, which returns results the caretaker and/or patient. With advanced 5G,  the results show up shortly after the sensing session is completed, significantly improving the user experience of patients and caretakers.

Most recently, LEOSED demoed its solution with two patients at Telenor premises using an indoor 5G network. The live demo engaged a huge crowd of students from Braunschweig Technical University, with Ph.. D. student Bo Kum Jung as a volunteer for tests. The live demo was a success, and also had remote support from Huawei in Munich as well as locally at Fornebu, Norway.

The demo using a 5G communication network illustrates that network Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) like uplink throughput and latency are essential. The aforementioned KPIs affect patients’ experience by reducing waiting times, during which the patient needs to stand still for measurement. When conditions are calibrated and the achieved KPIs meet the requirements, the patient’s waiting time is currently around 18-20 seconds per sample.

Tests show that the accuracy of sensing results depends on environmental and network conditions. For example, poorly captured frames (due to environment, i.e., lighting or position) need to be supplemented (extending measurement time). Longer measurement times introduce patient restlessness, affecting the distance between patient and camera and the position of the patient’s head.
