SRS-B5G at Imagine-B5G Open Call #1.

SRS-B5G, which stands for Imagine B-5G srsRAN Platform Extension, by Software Radio Systems Limited, is one of 15 projects that were selected for the first Open Call of Imagine-B5G. 

The main goal of SRS-B5G is to extend IMAGINE-B5G facility in Portugal with a complete multicell Open RAN deployment based on the srsRAN solution. Furthermore, the idea is to complement this extension with 5G RAN positioning features including NRPPa positioning protocol and 5G Positioning Reference Signals (NR PRS). Additionally, the project intends to showcase flexible deployable RAN solutions using srsRAN.

The proposed solution will impact IMAGINE-B5G in different ways: 

  • At the management level since it will use a modern k8s based RAN orchestration framework that will allow for a full gitops-like deployment of the RAN and thus facilitate zero-touch management of the resources; 
  • At the societal level since the usage of open-source technology in the Radio Access Network (RAN) has significantly impacted society by revolutionising telecommunications infrastructure; 
  • At the technical level the impact is substantial since it introduces a portable, modular and interoperable framework for radio access network deployment, which fosters innovation by allowing telecom operators – or testbed and facility managers in this case – to mix and match best-of-breed solutions, optimising performance and reducing vendor lock-in;
  • Finally, in vertical areas it will impact due to all the documentation being open-sourced and available publicly, which will help reproduce the extensions and possibly replicate the exact setup in other locations.
