FUSION in Imagine-B5G Open Call #2.

FUSION, an acronym for “A novel Framework for Unified Sensing, Insights, Observability and Networking,” represents a platform extension initiated by the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems and is among the 15 projects selected for the second Open Call of Imagine-B5G.

Distributed applications deployed across the compute continuum include heterogeneous observed resources, complicating monitoring and orchestration. This project aims to provide a holistic observability and analytics framework for fusing different signals (i.e., metrics, traces, logs) from distributed applications or network services. The planned work is twofold. On the one hand, by leveraging and integrating existing telemetry mechanisms and data collection methods, heterogeneous observability signals from diverse resources will be embedded in a common space towards knowledge construction via data fusion. On the other hand, various analytics pipelines will be applied over the fused information, including ones based on machine learning (ML) techniques, to enable multiple closed-loop-based automation processes utilising the extracted knowledge. The FUSION platform extension will use the Norwegian facility of the IMAGINE-B5G project to integrate its software solution with the overall IMAGINE-B5G architecture.

The proposed solution is poised to impact the IMAGINE-B5G Norway facility at multiple levels:

  • It will introduce a holistic data model that maps the contributing components of B5G/6G systems into a unified structure, enabling the generation of actionable insights.
  • By leveraging fused data and extracted knowledge, it will offer intuitive analytics and guidelines for identifying current or potential failures/anomalies and mitigating them effectively.
  • It will provide interfaces for real-time access to interlinked data, correlated datasets based on the defined data model, and detailed analysis results.
  • A realistic experimental use case will be showcased, inspiring potential users, SMEs, and academia to adopt and trust the IMAGINE-B5G facilities.
  • Lastly, the FUSION research team will share the project’s technical advancements and innovations through publications and presentations at selected prominent venues.

In summary, FUSION will extend the functionalities of the IMAGINE-B5G Norway facility by developing a streamlined open-source observability and analytics framework that will enable integration with and data retrieval from existing data sources, provide analytics and mitigation plans and facilitate orchestration mechanisms towards achieving sustained performance and energy efficiency. A high-level view of the envisaged architecture of the proposed platform extension is illustrated in Figure 1.
